HSN Debut! What to Wear?
December 17, 09
Every day I stand in my closet, thinking I have NOTHING to wear, even though the evidence on the hangers proves otherwise. Painstaking hours often pass while I aimlessly stare at the threads on the shelves and dripping from the racks like you do when you look in your fridge repeatedly, hoping to find something to eat when you know you have nothing more than salad dressing and nailpolish in there. (I was once told nailpolish lasts longer if you store it in the fridge. I have no idea if it’s true but I do it anyway.)
I am usually late because of this dilemna.
Todd has made me promise to figure out what I’ll wear – and try it on to make sure it works – hours before we go out (he really cannot stand lateness). I typically fail at this task and wind up asking him to give me an opinion on three or four different looks before we leave. And if he says he likes look two, I will – no doubt – ask him why not look one. He will then go downstairs. We both get annoyed. But we get over it later.
If it’s a struggle for me on, say, Wednesday, imagine the anxiety I have over what to wear for the HSN debut in February… in front of what could be 50 million people! 50 MILLION PEOPLE, PEOPLE!
I am stressing, freaking, and wondering how I can get something new when I have no budget to buy a thing. I am not excited about one thing I already own. If you’re not excited by what you wear or how you look on the outside, it definitely shows. On TV, I have to have my A-game on.
My dream looks…
The February 18th, 9a.m. ET morning show? Here, I can shop from my closet. I picture a black pair of above-the-knee crepe shorts, tights, and a purple ruffly top. Cheerful, chic, playful, not too high fashion but style fashion. I think it’s a good start.
The 8p.m. ET spot, the real debut, that’s where I struggle. I am dying to wear something fitted without being sexy (5-8 lbs must be removed beforehand), short without being mini, and bright. An eye popping color is the best for the small screen. Orange. I love orange. But with purple shoes. I heart contrasting bright colors together. The shoes, I own (saving money, right?). The dress… NO!
The one I kill for is Roland Mouret, the capsule collection of little dresses he did for net-a-porter.com (I probably go there once a week to drool over what’s new).

Limited edition RM by Roland Mouret - I weep!
Did I mention the price? I won’t. I’m too embarrassed.
Can’t repeat. The horror.
Friday at noon ET is more laid back. If I can fit into my very high waisted black pants, I would be ever so happy. And if I could find a flowy bright blue top, even better. I have nothing in mind right now – just the hope.
Later that day, there’s a 7p.m. slot. This look should be nice dinner, the kind I’d go on with Todd and my parents. OH! Something by Celine. Did you see the spring collection? No words for how good it is. I don’t care what it is from the line – a camel coat dress, skinny pants with a navy and white sailor sweater but with aggressive shoes and chunky earrings to add some edge, or a little shift that I can spruce up with a statement necklace.
The next slot is 2a.m.ET but really 11p.m. on PST. That is kind of late night fun to me – I’d like to add some punch. Did you see those kind of tie-dyed dresses from Proenza Schouler on the runway? Beeee-yond. Gorgeous. J’adore. Genius. Fun. Flirty. Glam. Sophisticated. I can bust out the purple shoes again!
Black card, anyone?
Yeah. Me neither. I will have to make do. Maybe for the April shows…
At least I’ll have great makeup!
Mwah!

You must – stress MUST wear Loubous – on the show… seriously, it’s required – especially with “RED SOLE” being one of the huge lippies, right?

OH, I know! Have to wear Loubs. Think J.Lo will give me rights to her song?
