Purple Lab’s Guide to Julianne Moore’s Eyes in “A Single Man”

March 24, 10

Did you see A Single Man, the Tom Ford film?

If not, RUN! Do not walk to the theater! It must been viewed on the silver screen. A breathtakingly stunning emotional story of a gay man in the 60s whose partner dies in a car crash, every moment is art directed to graphic perfection. And Julianne Moore’s makeup. No words! Beyond!

I sat down with Lashionista Modelista, Purple Lab’s peptide-packed liquid liner and tubing mascara duo, to recreate the look. Keep in mind – I really can’t pull it off the way Julianne can and the rest of me is not styled in a 60s vibe, but the eye makeup speaks for itself.

Purple Lab & The Power Women TV Shoot!

March 23, 10

When I first met Amy Palmer (follow her on Twitter), I was filming an episode of MTV’s Made as a Coach for a kid who wanted to be a fashion reporter (Hi Josh, if you’re reading this!). The end of his makeover, he did a stint backstage, interviewing a designer at Fashion Week on a show called NY 360… with Amy.

She’s a blond hurricane of good energy, smarts and sophistication all wrapped up in one. She called me last year to tell me about her new endeavor, launching Power Women TV, an online destination dedicated to women who are doing their own thing and making a difference.

Purple Lab’s Day of Even More Desk Sides!

March 17, 10

Start at the Hearst building – midtown and way, way west. Then head all the way east for a meeting at Meredith’s HQ. Back to hearst Then down and a little east for Conde Nast. Over to Meredith again before American Media. Oh yeah, Time Life Building was in there at some point. One more Conde Nast stop.

This is a close up of what we leave behind with each editor.

The security at all the buildings knew us by name today! Every time you go in, you give your ID, they call up and you get a pass to get in to the inner sanctuary. These are the remnants of the last 28 hours.

Purple Lab’s Day of Desk Sides with Editors

March 16, 10

Yesterday was a nonstop meeting marathon with beauty editors. Eight of them to be exact. They’re called desk sides (Last week, I wrote about how Sharon made this happen here). It’s when you bring your products to the editors at their desks, which makes their lives a lot easier.

This is Sharon getting our presentations ready.

Looks are everything with these things. You have about 10 to 20 minutes, 30 if you’re lucky, to make a good impression.

Purple Lab’s Guide to a Smoldering Eye

March 15, 10

We have officially started a series of how-to videos. And this is our guide to the smokiest, sexiest, Tom Ford-worthy smoldering eye. Smokey, hot and haute, it will get you noticed where ever you go! Sexy, dramatic makeup at its best.

All you need is one product… Purple Lab’s Lashionista Modelista, a peptide protein-packed, conditioning liquid eye liner (with felt tip applicator) and tubing mascara in the shade After Dark (with diamond dust).

Purple Lab: The Reality of an Indie Brand

March 12, 10

I’m having a bad day. There. I said it.

You know I eat, sleep, and breathe Purple Lab and words cannot accurately express the passion I have for it. But it’s not always a fun glamorous party. If I’m to be honest, which is what this blog is about – a true look at everything that makes a brand – than I will tell you this…  Just because you’re on HSN doesn’t mean you’re rolling in it, especially when you’re building a brand and investing in product development.

Purple Lab: How to get the clean natural look

March 11, 10

The spring runway – and even many fall runways – were stalked by glamazons sporting a fresh-faced, natural, no-makeup-makeup look. Have you noticed? So we put Ashley, one of our multi-tasking mavens, to the test and create the look herself.

Meet Ash:

She is an all-natural kind of girl to begin with (not to mention the most amazing singer ever – full on jazz vocals a la Norah Jones).

Armed with Silk Sheets luxe foundation infused with silk, Luxury Squared under-eye concealer and highlighter, collagen-packed Cheek Implants in Backstage Pass (ripe, delicious peach with golden undertones), Lashionista Modelista and Huge Lips Skinny Hips in Worship Kate, she turned herself into an exact replica of what Stella McCartney’s models looked like on the catwalk. (Love Stella, BTW.)

Purple Lab: Behind the Label

March 11, 10

Back in January, when we did our speed dating event, HSN filmed me to make a little video called “Behind the Label.” It was shot in a corner of a room at the W Hoboken, overlooking the NYC skyline. Gorgeous.

This is the result – a quick look at the brand, a little about moi, and a lot of love. So happy with it. Thank you, HSN! You are amazing!

Purple Lab PR Secrets

March 11, 10

Monday and Tuesday, Sharon and I will be doing “desk side,” which are one-on-one meetings with magazine editors at their desks.

The beauty editors – all editors, really – are inundated with event invitations, appointments, and deadlines. When you go to them, it helps make their lives easier.

This is the cute e-vite we did to get them on the books.

It’s not easy to get their attention and PR is really all about relationships at the end of the day. Lucky for Purple Lab, people love Sharon!

Purple Lab in Cosmo Magazine!

March 10, 10

Sharon, Purple Lab rock star Communications Queen, managed to do something I cannot imagine anyone else in PR accomplishing.

She secured a placement (translation: a piece) in the new Cosmopolitan Magazine!

Now… the reason it was an amazing feat.

Here’s the story. Sharon pitched the beauty editor at the magazine in the fall, when we thought we’d have the product in question… Luvah, the sexiest 3D lip color (both a stain and a gloss in one compact) infused with Dong Quai (an ancient Chinese herb known as a libido stimulant), Ylang-Ylang (used as the floral remedy for sensuality), Vitamin E (a nourishing antioxidant), vanilla mint scent (the better to kiss you with, my dear), and a double plumper I call “Complex OO.”
