Purple Lab on the Forums

March 3, 10

The best thing about partnering with HSN – I’m living my dream.

The down side - other people have something to say about it and not always so nice.

I don’t think every product is for every person. And I don’t expect the entire planet to live and die for Purple Lab, though I do wish they would! But I never quite expected to see some of the comments that have been popping up on forums and on my AOL blog, Beauty Blab.

One person said I looked like a short, fat Farrah Fawcett in my jumpsuit.

I know I’m short. Yes, I could lose a few lbs. That stung, even though a Farrah comparison is nice (just not the fat part).

Another comment said I should tame my hair.

I don’t like a lot of things about my physical appearance. Believe me. No one is harder on me than I am. But I’m just not a tame hair kind of girl. My crazy unruly curls suit me.

I also saw a little drama going down on one forum. Some people said “shame on HSN” for having Purple Lab and someone who follows us on Twitter and Facebook jumped in to say how and why she loves the brand. Thank you, Tabathia! You’re such a doll!

The person who started the convo, however, did not agree. She retorted, “This must be Karen writing this.”

I was in tears by the end of it. There was a lot of confusion over names of the colors of the lip glosses – like No Panty Lines and Worship Kate. Worship Kate is inspired by my style icon Kate Moss (one person didn’t understand why I’d worship a “drug addict,” but really, it’s about a personal sense of style that I worship, not a substance abuse habit. I don’t even drink!).

I couldn’t understand where so much anger was coming from. Like I said, I welcome all feedback on products – good or bad – because I can learn from them and improve. I know that every product is not for every one. It’s like perfume. My mom wears a Cartier fragrance that I love on her – but it’s horrid on me!

Don’t get me wrong – there were amazing reviews as well. Yay! For some reason, it’s easy for me to focus on the negative.

I’ve always been the type to look at myself in the mirror and see only the flaws – never would I do that with someone else, but me… I’m fair game!

Todd threatened divorce if I ever go back. I can’t change the way people see things and not everyone will take the time to really get to know Purple Lab or me as the Creatrix of the products.

So I have sworn them off – forever – and I just hope that we can all be friends! Is that so wrong?

Just my musing for the day.

Enjoy yours.

Mwah!

Shame on them for being disrespectful. Everyone has their two cents to throw in and sure they are titled to their own opinions but no need to try and look down upon someone else. You are amazing Karen and so is Purple Lab! Be proud and embrace it, you put in your hard work and you deserve the wonderful outcome. Keep killing with kindness and smile! Take care :)

  2. Tabathia Says:

I was absolutely appalled at the things I read in the HSN forum and I couldn’t remain quiet any longer. I had to get my own opinion across, of course rebute the horrible things being said and I tried to keep it a civil and nice as possible. I was really irritated and haven’t been back after speaking my peace because they upset me. I have learned that people on the internet can be the cruelist. I endured a lot of negative and very mean comments during the Purple Lab Star Model Search contest (to the point where I wanted to delete my entry), so I know first hand how devestating and upsetting it can be to know that people could be so harsh.

Karen, you are adorable! Your hair is perfectly fine (believe me I have extremely curly hair too but IT IS ME). Your outfits were amazing and fashionable. People speak out of jealousy and only because they wish they were out there accomplishing their dreams as you have! Keep holding your head high and SMILE! You are too sweet and have come too far to let these immature comments and people bring you down!! :)

Karen, some people just love to be awful. It makes them feel superior to put others down, like they’re not falling for it when really they just want to make everything ugly and mean. Those are the same people that think optimistic = niave. Don’t let them get your sunny spirit down. It’s just their way of showing how much better they are than everyone else. But we know better. Rock on creatrix.

  4. Lys Says:

Karen – do not, stress do NOT, let these people get you down. There are people who THRIVE on being negative and tearing people apart. For them to criticize you was just out of line. It makes me wonder what is so horrible in their life that they need to rip someone else apart while hiding behind a computer screen. Let it roll off and know that your products ROCK and you are fabulous!

  5. Andrea Says:

Karen dont you worry about the comments people are mean and not fair and need something to do…Nothing happens to mean people You do good you get good.
You have a wonderful heart and your prouducts are just perfect….xo

  6. Diana Says:

I think you are adorable and DO NOT NEED to lose a few lbs at all!! People are just ugly, and you can’t fix ugly! I enjoyed watching and purchased foundation and lip gloss. I like it. I will be watching again.
Try not to let it get to you. I know it would be hard for me too.

  7. Diana Says:

    PS… I HATE people!
    YOU ARE GAWWWJGUUUS!!!
    MWAH!

I am so sorry to hear this. This is the reason I stay away from Makeup Alley even–because of the pettiness that goes on in forums like those.

Those who know you for real, know that you are a beautiful person inside and out. We know how funny you are, we know how creative you are, we know how compassionate you are. So ignore the nay sayers Karen and continue living your dream. You deserve the best.

  9. Stacy Says:

In the words of the late Christopher Reeves… “Don’t give up. Don’t lose hope. Don’t sell out.” Keep your chin up, Karen. I admire the philosophy behind your makeup. You’re a beautiful woman who supports women beautifully. I feel sorry for the women who can’t find it in their hearts to join that club. They’re missing out on something truly wonderful.

Very Sincerely, Purple Lab Model #145

    Karen,
You said it best yourself, …”I can’t change the way people see things and not everyone will take the time to really get to know Purple Lab or me as the Creatrix of the products.”

You’re right! People sometimes prejudge either people or things that they know nothing about.

In my book, that makes their prejudicial opinions INVALID. They love to wallow in misery and negativity and for some, it’s the way they get undeserved attention.

IGNORE THE HATERS! Listen to this Jill Scott tune… Crank it up, dance to it, listen and live the message, my friend!

    Love ya!!!! MWAH!

Karen… I shop a lot on HSN. O-M-G. Those forums should be removed. I don’t know what the hell goes on with people there, but it’s seriously f’d up! Believe me, you are not the only vendor who gets the royal raspberry. In fact, every vendor does… from Carol Brodie to Emeril. When Serena Williams was first on after her little meltdown on the court, you would not believe the hateful and frankly racist comments. No one is exempt, they even rip on each other. I have NEVER seen a forum/message board like that. When one of the HSN hosts got married to one of the models, people on there went and found out where they registered for wedding gifts and had the gall to complain, like it was somehow a personal insult! Can you imagine??? I mean… wow… I was thinking “uh…. your stalker side is showing…”

You looked great, you were a ton of fun and your products are wonderful. You don’t have to defend them to some seriously uptight people who only like white bread, ya know? I read one comment that was something like “how embarrassing would it be to have a co-worker ask you during a meeting what color lipgloss you have on and you have to say Kitty Pole Dancer.” Now, I LOVE makeup, I might even think about it more than you! I have never asked another woman the brand and color of her lipgloss, nor has anyone ever asked me. And if I were too embarrassed to say it (note they ripped on NARS “orgasm” too?) I would just say “I don’t remember, I have a lot of gloss.” The story about the name of that color is very charming, and ya know what? So what if it was called that because you ARE or used to be or have a sister or mom who is a stripper? Big deal. Is that a crime? Not where I live.

Anyway… the fact that you sold out so many prodcuts proves most HSN *BUYERS* don’t walk through the world expecting everyone to conform to their narrow standards. Obviously the snarky stuff was from people who only like to bitch and moan. If they don’t want a fab lip gloss, then they can stick with Chapstick. If they are willing to make their dreams come true, work their ass off and sell their product on live TV and think not one person will be slightly critical… more power to them…

    you rock,

    Jen

    karen,
i know you know it and so do they, when you are successful and comfortable in your own skin, it makes people, most of whom aren’t happy with themselves uncomfortable, and therefore they retort inane bullshit in a tiny html box to hurt you, if they want to wage wars they should do so in their communities, not in a cosmetics lounge. i personally emailed you back and told you how happy i was to watch and get my priceless quiet time with no babies and my diet coke…i think you looked amazing. anyone who would attack your beautiful features, beautiful natural hair, and your grace is insane. i am five four and 159 lbs, ppl say i look great, my self image b.c of our crazy society tells me being a size 10 and having a baby five months ago is no excuse to be “fat” but we’re not fat, i’m not, your sure as hell aren’t, those hateful people have FAT brains that are full of nothing. i did however lol once b/c i never wanted to do that look book thing and i think you thought i did, and i was all “that girl has gotta get some sleep” you personally talk to all your supporters, customers, and naysayers. that should get you an allure stamp right there beautiful,
    keep rockin!
